Safeguarding Taxpayer Information

The Internal Revenue Service considers the protection of taxpayer information to be a major priority.  Organizations, businesses, individuals, and governments have a responsibility to protect confidential taxpayer information from cybercriminals.  The Federal Trade Commission is given the authority to set data safeguard regulations.  These regulations apply to various entities as well as professional tax preparers.+

All the organizations involved in the e-file process share this responsibility.  Included are any entities involved in one or more of the following functions concerning taxpayer information:

  • Transmission,

  • Sharing,

  • Storage,

  • Maintenance, or

  • Receipt.

Taxpayer information is information furnished in any form or manner by or on behalf of taxpayers for preparation or filing of their returns.
